So Rain was at this year’s MET Gala in New York, and we wouldn’t know it if not for (1) fan posts from social media; and (2) the Chinese press.
There was a time when a mere invitation – which his official website announced in advance, by the way – would merit full coverage from Korean media. I mean, we know how obsessed Koreans are whenever their celebrities get invited to events in the USA, much more big events such as the MET Gala. Entertainment agencies would usually milk it for all its worth with extensive media coverage from the invitation, to the airport departure, up to the actual event itself.
Rain gets invited to the of the biggest events in Hollywood, and what did Korean media report about him as soon as he left the country? His father’s interview about his son’s wedding plans. Or lack thereof. And another friend’s account of how this fellow is dating very well until now.
Seriously, am I the only one who finds this disturbing and utterly frustrating? What happened to our World Star?
I mean, we already heard the dating and wedding thing many, many times before. I think someone got very, very excited that the first wedding rumor trended in Korea, so they figured, what the heck, let’s do it again! Who cares if Rain has been doing something substantial as far as his career goes, right?
Yeah yeah. I know that some people don’t care and would take anything as long as it has Rain’s name on it. I know that there are people who gets excited about BiKim news even if it has been rehashed over and over again as if they constantly need validation that yes, they are still dating. (We get it, ok?) But as a longtime fan of Rain, I feel so frustrated. I know he could do better than this. I know he deserves something better than this. Unless all he wants to do now is to just date?
Incidentally, has anyone noticed that wedding ‘news’ crops up in Korea every time Rain is overseas? The first one came out when he was in Macau for the China Music Awards. Now that he’s in New York, his father suddenly conducts an interview to tell the press the same thing that his son, through his agency, already said when he first denied the wedding rumors (well, except for the wanting to get married ASAP thing). Why does this always happen when Rain is not around?
Incidentally 2, I think there is a big confusion as regards this interview. Except for AllKpop, English K-entertainment blogs reported it as Appa Kim who conducted the interview. But if you read the Korean source (and I was told, the Chinese versions, too), it was Appa Jung who said it. I tend to believe that it was Appa Jung because it was more ‘in character’, so to speak.
Anyway, I do hope that by tomorrow, Korean media outlets would finally report Rain’s MET Gala appearance, or at least, say something about his selfie with Julianne Moore.
It’s been a while since I’ve written anything about the usual contents of this blog because, well, there’s really nothing new nor exciting to write about. (Not that it has stopped me before, but people get tired sometimes, you know?) Anyway, this topic totally blew my mind because I never expected it.
On the latest episode of the tVn variety show Grandpas Over Flowers, Choi Ji Woo and Lee Seo Jin were on a drive with the fellow cast members in Greece when the topic of friends in the industry came up. Choi Ji Woo mentioned that she is friends with Kim Tae Hee, and both of them together with Song Hye Kyo like to watch movies together. As reference, here is the clip of that part as posted at On Demand Korea (embedding is not allowed so I’m just posting a link to the content). I had doubted the translations at first because, maybe, Ji Woo meant she goes to the movies with the princess at times and with Hye Kyo at other times, but I saw this recap from breathlesssurvival’s blog that basically confirms that Ji Woo said all three of them go to the movies together.
I know that Choi Ji Woo and Song Hye Kyo have been friends for a long time. They are part of a big circle of friends who all happen to be A-listers in Korean entertainment, including Jung Woo Sung, Lee Jung Jae and Kim Seung Woo. Choi Ji Woo and the princess, on the other hand, were in Stairway To Heaven together. They probably became friends through that drama. (Honestly, I had to Google how they became friends and was, like, when the results told me something that I should’ve already known as Stairway To Heaven was the first K-drama that I saw and got obsessed with. I guess I totally blurred out everything princess-related in my memory…)
However, Kim Tae Hee and Song Hye Kyo, hanging out together? Has anyone seen that coming? Did Choi Ji Woo
acted as referee became the common friend that brought them together?
Anyway, I’m not qualified to judge. I don’t know them personally. I’m just too floored at the thought, that’s all. Maybe I’ll just believe it when I see the princess’ face posted at Hye Kyo’s Instagram.
PS: I found it even more amusing that Lee Seo Jin followed up Ji Woo’s remark about her being friends with KTH and SHK by saying that he hasn’t seen those two but he has occasionally seen Rain. For once, I am not annoyed at seeing his and the princess’ names in one article. What I do found annoying, however, is how this segment of the episode is being used to drum up a few media plays for the couple (and I don’t mean Choi Ji Woo and Lee Seo Jin), just because both their names were mentioned.
What is up with the resurgence of BiKyo fans commenting on both their Instagram accounts that they miss the BiKyo couple? Even more so, what is up with some Rain-only fans – some of whom even berated me in the past for not supporting his choice in women – who are now posting messages of support for Song Hye Kyo on social media, particularly at Hye Kyo’s IG?
I already said yesterday that I’m done being all ‘drama queen’ about the non-events at the Shanghai Film Festival, and in light of recent, uh, video reports I shouldn’t be posting this. But this pic made me smile, which is such a welcome thing in my otherwise my crappy, migraine-induced day.
Hye Kyo, whatcha lookin’ at?
I’m gonna shut up now.
How important is Song Hye Kyo in the Chinese entertainment industry?
1. At the Shanghai International Film Festival Red Carpet event, she was escorted by Chinese Entertainment Royalty.
That’s director John Woo and Jackie Chan, in case you’ve been living under a rock and don’t know who they are.
2. There were four Korean guests at the red carpet of the Shanghai International Film Festival, all of whom are A-listers in Korea. Of the four, she’s the last to walk the red carpet. She walked with John Woo for their movie The Crossing, who let her have a solo stage of her own.
Hye Kyo was earlier reported to appear at the red carpet with her I Am Queen team, but she appeared with Director Woo for The Crossing instead. I think it’s because her IAQ director couldn’t make it.
3. She looks like a freakin’ GODDESS. ‘Nuff said.
Oh right, Rain was there, too, looking dashing with his Dangerous Love team.
But since Rain and Hye Kyo appeared at the red carpet more than an hour and a half apart, I am not counting that they will be spotted together. It seems the world is too big when it comes to these two. Never mind that they are in the same country, in the same city, in the same building attending the same event on the same day, hour and minute. The universe just hates me that way.
Then again, the night is young. Who knows?
Oh look. We have a representative.
Edited again, because I simply LOVE these photos of Hye Kyo from the SIFF red carpet:
Edited again and again, because finally there’s a BIKYO SIGHTING!!!!111
After exhausting my eyes squinting at the signature board, I finally found one photo of Kyo with Rain’s (partial) signature at the background.
